Why height matters strongly in Nadler
The height term is cubed, so small height-entry errors can produce a meaningful shift. Entering 175 cm as 1.75 m is correct; entering 175 as meters would be impossible and would explode the formula. This calculator converts height automatically before applying the coefficients.
When Nadler is a good first estimate

Maximum allowable blood loss is often approximated with the pattern allowable blood loss = EBV * (starting Hb - target Hb) / starting Hb, with hemoglobin sometimes replaced by hematocrit depending on local practice. Because EBV sits at the front of that equation, a 10% EBV error can create roughly a 10% allowable-loss error before other assumptions are considered.
Use a current hemoglobin or hematocrit rather than an outdated preoperative value when bleeding risk is high.

Pregnancy increases blood volume substantially, and obstetric hemorrhage can progress quickly while vital signs initially appear preserved. A nonpregnant adult EBV equation may underrepresent late-pregnancy physiology. Use obstetric-specific clinical guidance when estimating risk and preparing blood products.

Anthropometric equations describe population tendencies, not direct patient measurements. They can be less reliable in pregnancy, severe obesity, edema, ascites, dehydration, major burns, acute hemorrhage, chronic anemia with plasma expansion, polycythemia, heart failure, renal failure, elite athletic conditioning, amputation, and very small or very tall body habitus. Pediatric and neonatal patients require age-specific estimates and should not be handled with adult equations.
