# Plan the Energy Behind an EV Charging Session
This planner turns a charge window into a practical estimate. Enter the usable battery capacity, starting and target charge, sustained charger power, efficiency, price, and vehicle consumption to see what the grid supplies, how long the session may take, what it costs, and how much range the battery can recover.# Battery Energy and Grid Energy Are Different
The battery receives only part of the electricity drawn from the grid. The calculator divides energy added to the battery by charging efficiency to account for losses in the onboard charger, cable, battery temperature management, and related equipment. Use a realistic sustained power value because a connector rating is not always the power a vehicle can hold.| What you enter | What the planner does | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Usable capacity and charge window | Capacity × (target charge − starting charge) | Energy stored in the battery |
| Battery energy and efficiency | Battery energy ÷ efficiency | Energy drawn from the grid |
| Grid energy and charger power | Grid energy ÷ charger power | Estimated charging time |
| Grid energy and electricity price | Grid energy × price | Estimated session cost |
